SPS Corals - Small Polyp Stony Corals
Often referred to as hard corals due to their primarily rigid skeletons with minimal flesh and tiny feeding polyps, SPS corals demand special care.
These corals require frequent replenishment of elements like calcium and alkalinity because their dense skeletal structure consumes increasing amount as they grow. They also need higher, randomized water flow ranging from medium to strong, along with more intense lighting, depending on the species

Coral Type: Zoa
Flow Requirements: Low – Medium
Lighting Requirements: Low – Medium
ZOA Corals – Soft Corals
Often referred to as soft corals due to them not having a skeleton, they have a central mouth that helps them feed. Zoa’s are sometimes referred to as an easy coral to keep, although some Zoa’s are trickier than others. A helpful tip is to start them in low light and then start to move them into the light, generally at the bottom of your tank.
Another reason to start them in low light and flow is that they firmly get their foot down and adapt to where they have been positioned in the tank, once they are settled it is good to let them have more flow and this helps it keep free from detritus
In general, Zoa are a good beginner coral, as they come in different colours and patterns, they are not overly fussed on high nutrition levels and they can over thrive in higher nitrate and phosphate levels unlike other types of corals
They also need medium randomized water flow ranging from low to medium along with low to medium lighting depending on the species

Coral Type: LPS

Lighting Requirements: Low - Medium
LPS Corals – Large Polyp Stony Corals
Often referred to as large polyp stony corals due to their primarily rigid skeletons with predominantly flesh and with large feeding polyps and sometimes sweeping tentacles to help them find food. Many LPS corals can benefit from direct feeding which will help colour and growth. LPS are a good beginner coral but will require a balanced and maintained level of magnesium, calcium and alkalinity to ensure that the skeleton can form and grow accordingly.
They also need medium randomized water flow ranging from low to medium, along with low to medium lighting depending on species
